La Expedición Sinharaja

Situada en el extremo sur de la India, la isla tropical de Sri Lanka ha encantado viajeros durante siglos, con sus densas junglas y monumentos históricos. El antiguo patrimonio cultural de Sri Lanka se remonta a más de 2.500 años. El budismo ha sido la mayor influencia para moldear el variado patrimonio cultural de Sri Lanka. Los europeos, particularmente los neerlandeses y los británicos que colonizaron la isla, agregaron sus matices culturales.

Sri Lanka es uno de los puntos calientes de biodiversidad del mundo y tiene la mayor biodiversidad en Asia. Su clima variado y las condiciones topográficas han dado lugar a esta rica diversidad de especies. Gran parte de las especies son endémicas, un reflejo de la separación de la isla del subcontinente indio desde el final del Mesozoico. Esto es especialmente relevante para los reptiles y anfibios, que se distribuyen en una amplia gama de ecosistemas como los bosques tropicales de montaña, bosques de tierras bajas, praderas y humedales.
